Chris Camfield hat grad zugegeben, dass...
There was a prototype but that is nowhere close to being a beta.

MfGOriginally posted by Chris Camfield:
Nothing remotely releasable. We used it internally for testing different combat systems (turn-based? pausable real-time? etc). Placeholder graphics, no strategic, no hiring, no inventory, one map with a bunch of brain-dead enemies.Originally posted by Tobeas:
What exactly do you mean with "prototype"?

Could you tell us then how to make some changes in JA2?
I mean something like changing the town positions or make it impossible to conect to AIM or other sites. That would be very helpfull for futher modifications.
And if that isn't possible, could you tell me if you're using a TOOL for things like that? I just want to know.
now a real stupid question. I know that it was asked many time before but:
-wouldn't it be possible to make the sourcecode of JA1 or/and JA2 public?
-why don't u release some tools which you're surely using to modifie JA2?
About the prototype:
Is that something like JA3 or just something like UB?
Can I help you? I could do something like testings or so
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD GAMES!!!!
OOOPPPSSS!!! I forgot something:
I think you should make your own Mod. That would be a great thing. You can change EVERYTHING!!!
Streets(We can't do that), Towns(we can't do that, too), Soldiers, Stats, Weapons(add much more than we can), and so on.
I got a nice idea what could include:
As far as I know there was a version where you were able to zoom into the Map. So I thought it might be possible to add much of such maps. Something like traveling from Arulco to Trancona without changing the game(go out off JA2 and start UB). If that works you could add 3 or 4 of those maps
But that's just an idea.
And if you really want to make a Modification, look at bearspit's idea. It's just emazing what he has posted
[Edit]Finaly found that Thread
You can look at ít here
Hrm...
I think the town locations were hard-coded in the engine, so that would make it difficult to change their location. I don't know anything about modding; I don't know how you would put in a restriction on access to the laptop in a mod. My inclination (in such a situation) would be to fire up the source code and make the change there.
Regarding the source code - this just isn't in my hands. As I understand it, companies can be protective of source code because it's part of their intellectual property. If someone released the source code to a game, maybe they wouldn't be able to bundle it in a multi-game pack later on; or maybe it would reduce the overall value of the franchise simply because the amount of associated material became smaller.
One thing to keep in mind is that some of the code that was used in JA1 was still in use in JA2. A substantial core of the enemy AI in JA2 was from JA1, for instance.
As far as tools are concerned... well, barring the editor that we had for character profiles, and some of the elements in the main editor which weren't put in UB because they were - frankly - pretty flaky, I think you guys have most everything. You may think the UB editor was rough but it was less polished than that when we were developing JA2. Heck, everyone suffered through my viewing program for the STI graphic files; the windowed one that someone online created was better!
I don't think I'd have the energy to make a mod after hours. I mean, how many people like to come home from work and keep working? Yes, I did look at Bearpit's mod idea when he posted it; it's interesting.
Keep the faith,
Chris
